Year 1 2019 - 2020

Hello Year 1!

On this page are some challenges that you can try at home to keep learning and discovering new things. These challenges reflect what the year 1 children in school are learning. We have updated some of these challenges - English, DE and Phonics, (6.7.20) and Maths will be added tomorrow. We have left the previous challenges up too as you might not have completed them all (You don't have to do them all, they are only suggestions, but they are there just incase!). Remember, Mrs Howard has also added some lovely Well-being and Mindfulness activities so have a go at some of those too!

Do let us know what you are busy doing. As well as the challenges uploaded on here, the children in school are also doing PE and relaxation exercises. It is important to look after your body as well as making your mind work, so make sure you find time to exercise and relax too!

We are looking forward to seeing some of you again this week!

Twitter / emails

Please follow the school Twitter page. We'd love you to tweet us some photographs and messages to let us know what you've been up to. You can also send us an email using the email address

Home Learning Ideas

English, Phonics, Maths, Science, SRE, Wellbeing and Mindfulness

Please click on the different tabs at the top of the Year 1 page (above 'Year 1 2019-2020.') to find work for these different subjects. The matching files are on those pages too.

Have a go at drawing a plan of your bedroom (or another room in your home). Start by thinking about the overall shape of the floor (e.g. is it a rectangle?) and drawing this as large as you can on a piece of paper. Then draw on where the door and windows are. Next draw on the main pieces of furniture and anything else in the room that you'd like to add in.

This term in Year One we would have been learning about a new religion for our RE lessons called Islam. People who follow Islam are called Muslims. Do you remember learning about Creation, Big Bang and exploring beauty at the start of the year ? This activity is based on how many Muslims view Creation. Remember how we explained how there are lots of different views about this and we can have our own views whilst respecting the views of others.

Watch this clip, it may ask you to register but it is free to do so. “Zippy de Zip… Let’s go on a trip!”

Why do you think you should take care of the world?

What have you created recently?

Can you retell the story of the dog?

How can you show kindness today?

  • Joe Wicks
  • Cosmic Yoga
  • Skipping / Jumping - If you have a skipping rope, you could practise skipping with it. How many skips can you do in 30 seconds? If you find this tricky, you can start by lying the rope on the floor and seeing how many times you can bounce over the rope, from side to side. If you don't have a skipping rope, can you find something else to jump over? Maybe you could draw a line on the ground with chalk?

Salut Year 1! Ca va toujours?    Albert and Annick say 'bonjour' !

Hope you have checked our new  MFL webpage under our school tab . In the KS1 section  you can practise French with the new' Home learning grid', play French games and sing along French songs. Don't forget about the   ‘Tote bag’ Design Competition  ( Deadline 15th of June)  All details can be found on the MFL webpage.

 A bientôt!                                                                         Madame Saulnier

The Year 1 teachers have all enjoyed seeing the lovely Rainbow pictures displayed in people's homes and other places. The artist and illustrator Quentin Blake has created some great pictures using a rainbow - see some examples below (and there are more on his website):

Why don't you have a go at creating your own picture using a rainbow? We'd love to see some of them so, if you do, perhaps you could ask Mum or Dad to take a photo of it and email it to us!

Children should read regularly at home. When they are ready for a new book, they should put their book and reading record in their class basket / tray so that it can be changed.

Children should have a colouring book and some pencil crayons that they can keep in their tray to use during wet playtimes. We have some paper and crayons available for children to use.
